With the arrival of the trolley car in 1908, Little 5 Points (L5P) became one of the first commercial districts outside of downtown Atlanta. L5P grew into an avant garde arts and shopping district, serving the in-town neighborhoods of Inman Park and Candler Park. By the 1930's, there were many successful businesses in L5P, including three movie theaters (The Palace, The Euclid and the Little Five Points), three grocery stores (Kroger, Colonial and A&P), four drug stores, and three barbershops.

By the 1960's, L5P was struggling economically. In 1975, the City of Atlanta awarded community grants to L5P, which were used for public improvements. These grants and the entrepreneurial spirit of community-based businesses helped spur the revitalization of L5P. On this tour, we will explore the architecture and the legacy businesses that opened in L5P as far back as the 1950’s that are still in existence today in Little 5 Points.

The building housing the Wrecking Bar was built in the late 1800’s for businessman Victor Hugo Kriegshaber. Architect Willis Denny combined late Victorian with eclectic details. The building was once a home, a church, a dance studio, and an architectural salvage store.

“The Victor H. Kriegshaber House is historically significant for its association with Victor Hugo Kriegshaber, who was a leader in the cultural and economic development of Atlanta during the first third of the century, and the original owner of this house. He commissioned the building to be designed by architect Willis F. Danny just before 1900 and lived there with his family until 1924.The Kriegshaber residence is a fine example of Denny’s work; he practiced only a few years in Atlanta before his early death at 31 due to pneumonia, but managed to design many of the city’s most prestigious public and private structures before 1905. Stylistically, the house is a noteworthy transitional statement combining late Victorian and eclectic details.

\nKriegshaber was born in 1859 to Prussian immigrants living in Louisville, Kentucky. He did not make his home in Atlanta until 1889, when he left his civil engineer’s position with the Central of Georgia Railway to become a contractor and soon after president for forty-three years of his own building materials supply company. Nine years after his arrival in Atlanta, Kriegshaber was able to afford his elegant showplace on the periphery of Inman Park. He served in executive positions for countless businesses, civic, philanthropic, and cultural organizations. In addition to his building material supply business, Kriegshaber was the founder and first president of the Atlanta Terra Cotta Company, a director of the Atlanta Art Glass Co. and vice-president of the National Builders’ Supply Association. He was a director of the Chamber of Commerce and, in 1914, was part of the committee from the Chamber that spearheaded the new development at Lakewood for the Southeastern Fair. The Fair opened in 1916, the same year that Kriegshaber served as president of the Chamber of Commerce.

\n\nA charter member of the Rotary Club, Kriegshaber also served as director of the local council of the Boy Scouts of America, as president of the Jewish Charities and of the Jewish Educational Alliance and was director of the Hebrew Orphan’s Home. He was instrumental in establishing the city’s first public playgrounds for children and was later vice-president of the Playground Association of America. In 1905, Kriegshaber was one of the organizers of the Standard Club, serving as its first vice-president.<br/>\n\nKriegshaber served on the executive committee of the Atlanta Music Festival Association from its founding in 1909 until his death. The first Atlanta Music Festival, held in 1909 in the just completed Auditorium, was such a tremendous success that the Atlanta Music Festival Association inaugurated in 1910 the first of nearly twenty annual spring visits by the Metropolitan Opera to Atlanta’s Municipal Auditorium. In addition, his belief in the ability of local musicians and choristers led to the establishment of the Atlanta Philharmonic Society, of which he was president at his death in 1934.

We've served L5P and our bordering communities since 1972. Many people are unaware that our neighborhood once struggled with quite a bit of turmoil.

\nLittle Five Points (originally called the \"Bass\" district) was officially established at the end of the 19th century as a popular commercial district. The surrounding neighborhoods were quite affluent during the early 20th Century, especially Inman Park; with luxurious homes and close proximity to town, people flocked to buy property here.

\nHowever, after the Great Depression, the community went through a steady decline in home ownership and quality of life; by 1965, it had all but fallen into urban decay. Violent thugs, drug dealers, and slumlords were actively destroying what was once a well-respected part of Atlanta. City officials were also trying to rezone and demolish as much of the area as they could, and it didn't help that all the banks nearby were focused on profits and wouldn't give mortgage loans to locals.

In 1970, the local citizens decided they’d had enough. They formed coalitions, acquired funding, organized demonstrations, and united for a common cause: to take the neighborhood back. These folks knew that buying property and opening businesses would help make this area a great place to live again. One such group was named the Bass Organization for Neighborhood Development - or “BOND” for short. They had a bright idea: if banks wouldn't lend to locals to buy their own homes, they’d form their own financial institution. Word spread quickly.

\nBOND Community Federal Credit Union was officially chartered in 1972 as a not-for-profit, member-owned financial institution. It had taken over two years of tenacity and a $2500 loan from the local Mennonite Church to convince NCUA (National Credit Union Administration, our federal regulatory agency) of its worth. BOND's first \"office\" was a humble kitchen in a neighbor’s home; our founders actually sold peaches in the streets of Atlanta to pay the first year’s dividends on members’ deposits. Though it took a few more years to progress, BOND Community FCU eventually developed well beyond its original purpose of providing neighborhood denizens with savings accounts and mortgages.

\n\nWe are now almost 5,000 members strong with approximately $40 million in assets, and we've lent out over $160 million dollars since our inception. We've expanded our coverage to over a dozen unique Atlanta neighborhoods as a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), supporting local initiatives such as events/festivals, in-school banking, funding drives & donations, Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, Children’s Miracle Network, and more.

In 1982 several community groups primarily led by WRFG Radio, asked for a 10 year lease on the closed school building at 1083 Austin Ave NE in Atlanta, the old Moreland School. The school board first leased and then sold the building to the new non-profit corporation set up to own and manage the building.

Mindful of the threat that rising costs would push non-profit arts and service groups out of the neighborhoods where they developed and which they served; L5PCC, Inc. has endeavored to provide low-cost space for community-based non-profit groups. The Center’s governance has always included the participation of resident companies and community leaders. The Center is in its year of providing this facility to the community.

Early on, the Center attracted a serious theater company in the Horizon Theatre Co. The Georgia Solar Coalition and Metro Fair Housing Services were long time tenants of the Center and have moved on to successful programs and services elsewhere. A major community Arts organization was among the original companies in the Center. The Euclid Arts Collective has produced and sheltered many of Atlanta’s most promising and accomplished visual artists. Overcoming problems with old boilers and drainage, the Center paid off its mortgage to the School Board in 2007.

Overall, the enterprise has been an ongoing success. As the Center’s resident companies have changed and new ones have joined the mix, a need for a renovated environment for more mature organizations was realized. Accordingly, the Center began a major capital fundraising effort in 2006. This campaign has already resulted in new sidewalks and a new driveway. An elevator and other improvements are scheduled for 2008-2009.

The Center has become a major factor in the community just as planned. Neighbors, funders, neighborhood organizations and the general public around the region are involved in Center participation. The future looks hopeful for another 25 years of service to our community.

Freedom Park Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the improvement and preservation of the park for the benefit of a diverse public. Our vision is for Freedom Park to be Atlanta’s most innovative green space, celebrated for its inspiring origin and beauty.

Founded as a membership 501 c(6) trade association in 1992,\nthe Little 5 Points Business Association's mission is to advocate on behalf of\nit's business members through a unified voice, promote and establish economic\ndevelopment policies for the enhancement and improvement of the Little\nFive Points Business District.

The L5PBA is the creator of The Little 5 Points (L5P)\nHalloween Festival and Parade which is one of the top ten Halloween events in the country. The festivals began in the 1970’s and the parades were added in\n2000. Each October, thousands of people flock to Little 5 Points to enjoy great\nfood and drink, live entertainment, local vendors, and the best Halloween\nparade in the South!
